Regenerative Medicine
Platelet Rich Plasma
The human body has an innate ability to heal itself from injury. Guided by this knowledge, platelet rich plasma therapy was developed to treat numerous musculoskeletal ailments.
Platelet rich plasma therapy is defined as using a person’s own plasma with the platelet level above the normal baseline. The reason for high concentration of platelets is two-fold. Not only do platelets help with clotting; they play a key role in the healing process and the construction of new connective tissue.
At OlympusMD Pain and Wellness Specialists, we use a standardized method to obtain and deliver this therapy to your painful areas. This process is initiated by obtaining a blood draw. We then use a centrifuge to spin your blood down to separate the platelet rich plasma (PrP) from the red blood. After acquiring the PrP, we inject it in the affected areas with Ultrasound or Arthroscopic guidance to insure for accurate placement. This process leads to the beginning of regeneration of the injured tissues. Platelet rich plasma also has great benefit in treating male pattern baldness.
Stem Cell Therapy
Stem cells are defined as the originator cells for multiple other cells in the body. In regenerative medicine we focus on the mesenchymal stem cells (MSC). MSC have been shown to help with multiple boney and soft tissue ailments. The procedure to isolate MSC from bone marrow and fat cells is done at the clinic. The patient will undergo bone marrow aspiration to acquire the bone marrow. It is then separated by special substances to allow for a concentrated level of MSC and injected in a similar fashion to PrP. Stem cell therapy has been shown to help with multiple boney and soft tissue ailments including small tendon injuries, osteophytic pain, and osteonecrosis of the hip.
